As a farmer, you know that there are many different ways to successfully grow and produce crops throughout the year. Though most farmers prefer to use the traditional in-ground planting method, many are starting to realize the benefits of an aquaponics growing operation. It’s sustainable, works year-round, requires far less water than other farming methods, and works for a wide variety of plants. Unfortunately, the equipment can be expensive. This means you’ll need to secure agricultural financing if you want to transition a portion of your operation to aquaponics. Here’s what you need to do to secure a great aquaponics grant.

Research Your Options

Standard USDA-backed grants often have clear use restrictions for how you can use the money you receive. In many cases, this means you won’t be able to use the money to purchase and establish your new aquaponics setup. Instead of looking at the standard grants, do a little research. Look for grants that are approved for aquaponics or specifically tailored to helping farmers get started in the industry. Read up on the types of requirements you need to meet, the use restrictions, and the average amounts awarded.

Apply to Several Grants

Though it’s tempting to apply to a single grant that meets your needs, it’s never in your best interest. You may or may not get the money and without it, you’re left looking for alternative agricultural financing. Whenever possible, apply to at least three aquaponics grant programs. Be as detailed and thorough in your application as you can and see what each grant issuer says. If you put your best foot forward, you should qualify for at least one grant. If you qualify for more than one, read up on the restrictions associated with each grant. Some may not allow you to accept more than one grant at a time. Others may allow you to combine the funds you receive.

Don’t Rule Out Loans

Even the best aquaponics grant may not be large enough to help you get your new system off the ground. If this is the case, you’ll need to apply for agricultural financing or traditional loans for farmers. The sooner you submit your application, the easier it will be to bring your vision to life quickly.
